EPP team members Marija Vranic and Jorge Vieira were awarded with a total of 68 million core-hours at the TIER-0 supercomputer Marenostrum, at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The computing time was awarded by the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) during the 23rd call, and were selected amongst 61 submitted proposals. The project “Direct laser acceleration of leptons in plasma” was awarded with 36 million core-hours (PI: MV). This project will be dedicated to investigate advanced positron sources for plasma-based accelerators based on nonlinear QED processes. The project “Acceleration control and superradiance in laser-plasma accelerators” was awarded with 32 million core-hours (PI: JV). This project will be dedicated to investigate coherent x-ray emission and acceleration in laser-plasma accelerators. 

Timon Mehrling has joined our team to work with Ricardo on several projects connected with the future of Osiris. Timon joins our team with a prestigious DAAD P.R.I.M.E. Fellowship, jointly with the University of Hamburg, after obtaining his PhD degree from the University of Hamburg and DESY under the supervision of Dr. Jens Osterhoff and Prof. Brian Foster.

Many congratulations to Paulo Alves (IST PhD), now post doc at SLAC/Stanford, and Fabrizio Del Gaudio (Poli Torino MSc), André Lopes (IST MSc) and Fábio Cruz (IST MSc) (all will join the APPLAuSE PhD Program) for their recent graduation with excellent marks.

Two new Idea Walls have just opened at GoLP. Painted with IdeaPaint these walls are ready to take on the creativity and the ideas at the tip of GoLPers’ dry eraser markers.

Kevin Schoeffler has joined our team as a post-doctoral fellow to work on magnetic field dynamics generated in conditions associated with intense laser-plasma interactions and on fundamental questions associated with magnetic reconnection resorting to massively parallel kinetic simulations.

André Lopes has joined the epp team for his MSc thesis at IST (MEFT). His thesis will be focused on the exploration of nonlinear processes in plasma metamaterials working in close collaboration with Paulo Alves.

IST magazine Valores Próprios, Number 2 features an interview with Frederico Fiúza, epp team alumni, describing his experience while working and doing research at GoLP.

The Extreme Plasma Physics team has now a new member, Ujjwal Sinha, who is joining as a Post-Doctoral fellow.
Ujjwal completed is PhD last year from the Institute for Plasma Research, Gandhinagar, India. He worked on “Radiation Pressure Acceleration of Ions by Ultra Intense Laser Pulses in Bulk Targets” under the supervision of Professor Predhiman K. Kaw.

Starting in November 2013, Pedro Carneiro joined the EPP team for an internship. Pedro is a MSc student at IST (MEFT) and he will focus his research on understanding how intense lasers modify the vacuum properties and how can this be numerically explored.
